Back in the 1980s when Schwinn and ultra-endurance athlete Jonathan Goldberg (aka "Johnny G") introduced the Spinning program, they may not have known what a popular form of high-intensity exercise it was to become.
But on Sunday, Feb. 17, hearts will be beating faster, legs will be pumping and wheels will be spinning during the JCC's first "Race Day" event. During this two-hour ride on the indoor cycles, instructors Tom, Stacey and Bobbi Sue will lead the participants in a number of different types of cycling.
"Their routines are designed to simulate terrain and situations encountered in actual bicycle rides, including hill climbs, sprints and interval training. Coasting downhill, obviously, is easiest to simulate, and most instructors will lead what is called an interval ride, this is where students will sprint, run, climb, and jump all in the same ride," said Beth McCullough, JCC Fitness Specialist. "If this Race Ride is as popular an event as we expect it to be, we will schedule additional rides periodically throughout the year!"
Two bikes still are open for Race Day, and McCullough said she encourages anyone interested to sign up soon. Registration fee is $20 per racer, and the net proceeds will be donated to the Mid-Ohio Food Bank. Participants also are encouraged to bring two non-perishable, sealed, food items to be donated to the food bank.
Water, fruit, a nutrition bar and a goodie bag will be provided to each participant. To register, contact McCullough at (614) 559-6207.
