InBound Logistics Ranks Columbus as a Logistics Hotspot

Logistics Hotspots The Columbus Region continues to gain recognition and respect for its thriving logistics industry. In May, InBound Logistics magazine included Columbus in its shortlist of 2010 logistics hotspots. The region was noted for its central location, wealth of transportation choices, and the Columbus Region Logistics Council.

"Much of the logistics excitement in the area stems from the Columbus Region Logistics Council, a consortium of shippers and service providers working to cultivate a strong business environment, further develop the local infrastructure, take advantage of new technologies, and foster a highly skilled workforce," the magazine said.

Training Pilot Program Graduates 24

Building a high-skill workforce for competitive advantage is a core mission of the Columbus Region Logistics Council. As part of this mission, the Logistics Attracting and Retaining Talent Program (ART) is successfully moving forward by graduating its first 24 students this summer.

The Logistics-ART project is geared to developing an entry to mid-level workforce for logistics businesses residing in the Columbus MSA (defined as: Delaware, Fairfield, Franklin, Licking, Madison, Morrow, Pickaway, and Union Counties in central Ohio).

The program, developed through a partnership of Columbus State Community College and the Central Ohio Workforce Investment Corporation, is funded by a $4.6 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor.

CRLC members ODW Logistics and Midwest Express provided onsite training as part of the pilot program. Participants also spent a week in the classroom learning about logistics, customer service and resume writing. Upon graduation, they are qualified for entry level to skilled positions such as forklift operators.

Columbus' Fox 28 featured a report about the pilot program recently.

The official description of the grant awards can be found at the Department of Labor Web site.

Summer Internship Program

The Columbus Region Logistics Council is pleased to again be partnering with Cofer Consulting Solutions, LLC to deliver the 2010 Columbus Region Logistics Council Summer Internship Program.

This summer, 10 employers have brought a total of 17 interns onto their teams. CRLC members who are involved include Big Lots, Columbus Chamber, DSW, E.E. Ward Moving & Storage, McGraw Hill, ODW Logistics, Pacer, Plante & Moran, Schneider Downs, and Zipline Logistics. The students represent six universities and majors such as accounting, communication, finance, human resources, and of course logistics management.

The comprehensive program offers opportunities for the interns ranging from professional development forums and site tours to a night at Huntington Park and other networking events. For example, on July 14 many of the interns converged on Blendon Woods Metro Park's Hickory Grove Shelter House for an experiential learning event. You can view those photos on Facebook.

For more information on the summer internship program, contact David Cofer at david.cofer@coferconsulting.com.

Member Spotlight: Zipline Logistics

Zipline Logistics Zipline Logistics is a North American Third Party Logistics company providing truckload, less than truckload (LTL) and intermodal (IMDL) transportation, based in downtown Columbus.

Why Zipline is a Member of the Columbus Region Logistics Council
Active membership within the CRLC allows us to participate in ongoing discussions about the local business environment, specifically within the logistics world. Our fellow members initiate an "ear-to-the-ground" round table of what is going on, how it impacts our businesses and how we can benefit from the overall Columbus region. Not ALL members of the CRLC are actual logistics companies, as the membership is a make-up of manufacturers, accounting firms, law firms etc. That makes the meetings very informative from a plethora of backgrounds vs. just hearing from all one industry.

Interesting Facts about Zipline
The principals of Zipline all attended Miami University. Although we did not all know one another in school, we met while living and working in Chicago. In fact, we came up with the idea to form Zipline on a napkin at a bar after a Chicago Cubs game, which is very telling of our personalities. One more interesting point is that the absolute LAST thing we came up with was our name. We were due to open in weeks, and still struggled for a name that we all loved. One of our partners had vacationed in Costa Rica one year earlier, had done the Zipline Tours through the rainforest, and once the name was suggested, we never looked back.

Featured Product or Service
As truck capacity is shrinking in the overall marketplace, Zipline helps customers find the capacity that they need! Zipline ensures on time and on budget delivery for our customers through dedicated teams of fully accountable operations associates devoted to satisfying each customer's preferred scheduling and load tracking procedures. Zipline professionals leverage technology, experience and strong relationships with our carrier partners to maximize the overall efficiency and bottom line savings for our customers' logistics operations.
